How Rio built funk
Brazilian funk begins in Rio's suburban dance halls of the 1970s and 1980s, where sound-system crews known as equipes imported American soul, funk and, decisively, Miami bass records. When local producers began replacing imported instrumentals with their own, funk carioca stopped being a DJ format and became a Brazilian genre.

The baile as institution
A baile funk in Rio is not simply a party. It is an economy, a soundcheck for new records, and for decades the main distribution channel a new MC could reach. Tracks were tested live, rewritten between sets, and spread by cassette, CD-R and later WhatsApp.

Rio subgenres
Rio produced the widest range of funk substyles: proibidão documenting favela conflict, conscious funk arguing about it, melodic funk aimed at radio, and passinho, the dance style that became the genre's most visible export.
The city's current output leans on 150 BPM montagens and heavier low end, closer to São Paulo's influence than at any earlier point.
Rio versus São Paulo
Rio's funk is percussive, chant-led and rooted in the tamborzão lineage. São Paulo's is bass-led, faster and producer-driven. The two scenes now trade techniques constantly, but the difference is still audible in the first bar of most records — compare with funk paulista.
